Finding Lasting Peace from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Introduction

Hi, I’m Charles Linden. Living with PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) can feel as if your mind is locked in a constant state of alert, reliving past trauma over and over. PTSD isn’t just about stress, it’s an overwhelming feeling of reliving past pain, which often feels out of control. For years, I was trapped in a cycle of anxiety that kept me stuck in my fears, and through my journey, I discovered practical ways to regain control. I want to share these insights with you, so you can move forward from the pain of PTSD and find a sense of calm and safety in your life again.

Understanding PTSD

  • What is PTSD?
PTSD is a condition triggered by traumatic events. Unlike regular memories, traumatic memories linger, sometimes replaying involuntarily and intensely. PTSD causes the body and mind to remain in a high state of alert, as if the trauma is still happening. This can make daily life, social interactions, and even moments of relaxation challenging.
  • Recognising Symptoms
    • Intrusive Thoughts: These are distressing memories that come unbidden and seem to transport you back to the traumatic event. They can be as vivid as a movie, causing panic and a sense of “reliving.”
    • Avoidance: Many people with PTSD avoid situations, places, or even people that could remind them of the trauma. While this may provide short-term relief, it can lead to isolation and further difficulty in moving on.
    • Heightened Vigilance: People with PTSD often feel on edge, as though danger is imminent. This heightened state of arousal can cause sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and being easily startled.

Common Questions

  • Why does PTSD feel so powerful and uncontrollable?
PTSD affects the amygdala, a part of the brain responsible for emotional responses. During trauma, the amygdala becomes highly active and “records” the memory as a threat. This keeps the memory “alive” and close at hand.
  • Will I ever stop feeling this way?
Yes, recovery from PTSD is possible. Many people experience a significant reduction in symptoms over time, especially with focused techniques designed to help the brain re-process traumatic memories.
  • Can others tell I have PTSD?
While PTSD is primarily internal, symptoms like irritability, avoidance, and jumpiness may be visible to those around you. However, most people are more understanding than we realise.

Causes and Triggers

  • Underlying Causes
    • PTSD often stems from extreme events that impact the brain’s ability to retain control over emotions and fear. These events can cause the brain to store the trauma as a “live” event, keeping the fear response on high alert.
  • Common Triggers
    • Sounds, smells, certain words, or places related to the trauma can act as triggers, reigniting PTSD symptoms. By understanding triggers, you can create strategies to manage or avoid them initially.

My Journey and How I Can Help You

My own battle with anxiety taught me what it feels like to be held captive by intense memories. Through my journey, I learned that you can powerfully retrain the mind to remove inappropriate fear. These methods gave me freedom and control I thought I’d lost forever, and I’m here to share them with you, so you too can build a calm, secure life.

Steps to Overcoming PTSD

  1. Grounding Exercises: Practise breathing techniques or grounding exercises (such as the “5-4-3-2-1” method) to refocus your mind on the present. These exercises can interrupt the brain’s fear response and help you regain control during flashbacks.
  2. Positive Redirection: Engage in activities that demand focus, like solving puzzles, drawing, or listening to music. By engaging your mind in something tangible, you can disrupt intrusive memories and bring yourself back to reality.
  3. Daily Routine Building: Structured routines, especially those that include physical exercise, meditation, or journaling, can provide a foundation of normalcy and safety, gradually reducing the brain’s vigilance.

Conclusion

PTSD may feel powerful, but with simple strategies and the right support, you can find peace and freedom from past trauma and disordered fear. Recovery is possible, and it starts with simple steps toward creating a calm, safe future.
